Best Drill Bit Set Reviews & Comparison (Updated!)

First Things First: Why Did I Decide To Write About Drill Bits?

Have you ever felt frustrated using a cheap tool?

While making a repair at home, have you ever been betrayed by a poor-quality screwdriver?

Have you ever berated at a pair of pliers that gave up on you in the middle of a job?

I have been there. I have had to rely on cheap tools when I was in a pinch and, BY GOD, it was frustrating when any of the above happened. I hate cheap tools. I hate to waste money on them, I hate when they break on my hands, I hate when they destroy the tiny screws that hold my iPhone battery on its place. (All of these have happened to me in the past.)

After spending too many hours suffering with poor quality tools, I decided it was time for a change, and I spent 46 hours reading customer reviews and forum posts by DIYers like me, reading magazines, and also looking at pictures before choosing what I wanted to buy.

Most Durable Kit: Bosch MS4091

What I like the most about Bosch’s kit is the ratcheting screwdriver that comes along with it. The bits in this kit are coated with titanium, a tougher material than the black oxide used in most kits. The assortment here is good, too. Bosch’s case is tougher, which means it will be more durable than the average. Click here to see the price at Amazon.

So now my rant is over and you will better understand my point of view. Moving on, I will talk about the good stuff.

Pilot Hole and Countersink Set: Snappy 40030

This is an American-made, high-quality set, and it is fully compatible with quick-change chucks (1/4 hex shank). These are very practical and offer great value for your money. What else should you ask for? Click here to see the price at Amazon.

Forstner Set: Porter-Cable PC1014

This set comes with 14 Forstner bits, all properly protected in a good box for longer durability. Porter-Cable is a traditional brand, that makes a quality toolkit, and sells it at a great price. What else is there to say about it? Click here to see the price at Amazon.

    • Brad Point: 13 bits (2x1/8", 9/64", 5/32", 11/64", 3/16", 13/64", 7/32", 15/64", 1/4", 9/32", 19/64", 5/16")
  • DRIVING BITS:
    • Nut Setters: 8 setters in 7 sizes (3/16", 2x1/4", 9/32", 5/16", 11/32", 3/8", 7/16")
    • 1" Insert Bits: 22 bits: Philips (6 un. in 3 sizes: PH1, 4xPH2, PH3), Slotted (3 un.: SL6-8, SL8-10, SL10-12), Square (3 un.: SQ1, SQ2, SQ3), Torx (10 un. in 3 sizes: 3xT10, 4xT15, 3xT20)
    • 2" Power Bits: 12 bits: Philips (4 un. in 3 sizes: PH1, 2xPH2, PH3), Slotted (3 un.: SL6-8, SL8-10, SL10-12), Square (3 un.: SQ1, SQ2, SQ3), Torx (2 un.: T15, T20)
  • OTHER ITEMS:

VERDICT: This Black & Decker set has no spade bits, no hole saw, and no sockets. The bit materials are not special, meaning they are likely to last less. And they added 34 screws to increase the “parts” count from 75 to 109. It is also one of the cheapest drill & drive bit sets that I have analyzed, plus it does have bit size variety. If you intend to use something once in a blue moon and are very short on cash, it could still be useful to you without having to risk buying a no-name brand. Personally I would not spend my money on them, however Amazon has many positive product reviews – you can check them out here.

    • Brad Point: 5 bits in 4 sizes (1/8", 2x 3/16", 1/4", 5/16")
  • DRIVING BITS:

    • 1" Insert Bits: 13 bits: Philips (3 un.: P1, P2, P3), Pozidriv (3 un.: PZ1, PZ2, PZ3), Slotted (3 un.: SL4, SL6, SL7), Torx (4 un.: T15, T20, T25, T30)
  • OTHER ITEMS:

VERDICT: One word to define this kit? Convenience. This has quality bits that will not let you down in the middle of a job. It is a quality starter for a brand new home owner, so it makes for a heck of a gift too. Hop to Amazon and see more about it.

Bosch MS4041

  • DRIVING BITS:
    • Sockets: 6 sockets (3/16", 7/32", 5/16", 11/32", 3/8", 7/16")

  • OTHER ITEMS:

VERDICT: If you like Bosch’s tools and trust their quality, their current lineup offers more bit variety for slightly more money. This kit has two additions worth your money in regards to the 34-unit I mentioned above: the right-angle screwdriver attachment for driving screws in tight places or weird angles, and the spade bit for drilling bigger holes in wood. You can find it by clicking here.

    • Rotary Masonry: 11 bits in 6 sizes (2x 1/8", 2x 5/32", 2x 3/16", 2x 1/4", 2x 5/16", 3/8")

  • OTHER ITEMS:

VERDICT: This is another case where you get what you pay for. It is a cheap kit with a great variety of bit sizes. In my opinion you would be better off buying a smaller kit with less bit sizes and more quality instead, this way you spend your money only once. Many buyers on Amazon give low ratings for this Hitachi kit, you can read them yourself.

5 Drill Bits Types To Drill Big Holes

The first big hole I drilled was very expensive. My mission was to install a new deadbolt lock in our front door.

Lacking the needed 2-1/8 in. drill bit, I improvised; I used a pencil and tomato paste can to trace the hole on the door, then drilled a small pilot hole and began cutting away with a jigsaw. One hour, four jigsaw blades and one now unusable door later, I concluded a much cheaper hole saw would have been a wise investment.

Boring large holes isn’t an everyday occurrence, but when you do encounter the task, it’s important to have the right tools and skills.

Big Boring Basics

The various big diameter bits have a few guiding principles in common:

  • Big bits work best with big drills. For best results, use at least a 1/2-hp (4 to 5 amps) drill with at least a 3/8-in. capacity chuck (one that can grasp bit shanks up to 3/8 in. in diameter). Anything smaller and you'll risk burning out the motor or getting the bit stuck halfway through the hole. Drilling large holes can easily overtax a cordless drill too. A 12-volt cordless tool can handle some jobs, but anything less powerful is iffy.
  • Drill at a low speed-500 rpm or slower. Most large, 1/2-in. drills spin in that range anyway, but operate smaller variable speed drills at low speeds.
  • Never use the constant-on button. If you lose your grip, the drill will keep spinning until it's wound the cord around itself or you, battering your project along the way.
  • Never underestimate the power of a big drill and bit. I've injured myself boring holes through studs when the bit has bogged and the still-revolving drill has flung my hand into the floor or stud. Brace yourself firmly and use extreme care when working from a ladder. Use a drill with a side-handle for the most control.
  • Brace your work; the friction of the bit can spin even large boards.
  • Splintering the backside of the hole is a problem with any bit, but particularly with large ones. Use a backer board or drill from both sides.
  • Wear protective eyewear.

Hole Saws

Hole saws cut only the perimeter of the hole, making them useful only for holes bored all the way through.

There are many versions of the hole saw:

  • Standard hole saws cut to a depth of about 1-1/4 in.;
  • Deep cutting versions cut 1-3/4 in. or more — deep enough to bore through a stud in one shot.

Hole saws require a center bit to get them started and keep them on target. Some manufacturers use a pilot bit — simply a twist drill bit that’s secured to the hole saw with a set screw. Others use a mandrel or arbor — a twist drill bit attached to a locking nut that secures it to the hole saw. One pilot bit, mandrel or arbor will guide a whole set of compatible hole saws.

When working with hole saws, remember:

  • The tip of the pilot bit must be set at least 1/8 in. beyond the perimeter cutting teeth.
  • When using a carbide hole saw to drill through tile, chip the glazed surface with a prick punch to help stabilize the pilot bit.
  • Stay perpendicular to the surface; cutting at an angle will cause the hole saw to bind and create an oblong hole.
  • Hole saw cutouts make great wheels for toys and projects. Remove the cutout from the hole saw by punching or prying with a 16d nail through one of the side or top access holes.

Spade Bits

Spade bits commonly range in size from 1/4 to 1-1/2 in. and are relatively inexpensive.

They basically shave away wood, meaning you need to push them into the wood for them to cut effectively. Dull bits can be sharpened with a file.

Bits with raised spurs on the outer edge of the spade will minimize — but not eliminate — tear-out when breaking through the far side of a hole.

Spade bits, because of their simple design, are easily modified. If you need a tapered hole, taper the bit’s sides with a file or grinder. For a slightly smaller hole, uniformly file down the edges.

Self-Feeding Boring and Auger Bits

These self-feeding bits are often used by electricians and plumbers. The center feed screw pulls them into the wood while the inside cutters quickly remove wood. The wood boring-type bits resemble a Forstner bit but have large, aggressive teeth. They range in size from 1 in. to more than 4-1/2 in.

The auger-type bits have a maximum diameter of about 1-1/2 in. The auger design delivers wood chips out of the hole, making these bits ideal for boring deep holes. Long bits allow better access to studs and eliminate a lot of climbing and stooping.

Boring and auger bits stand up well against occasional nails and tough knots. If you have hundreds of holes to drill, they’re worth the investment.

Forstner Bits

These are the bits of choice for woodworkers and furniture builders. They bore holes with exceptionally smooth walls and flat bottoms (except for the small indentation from the centering spur).

They’re guided by the perimeter cutters and are ideal for boring holes that are angled or overlapping.

Adjustable Bits

There are many types of expand-able bits. Avoid the super-cheap ones; they break or wobble and cut slowly. The ones I’ve had best luck with are:

  • Adjustable hole saws and circle cutters. Outer cutting spurs are 1/2 to 4 in. from the pilot bit to cut holes 1 to 8 in. in diameter.
  • Expandable spade bits. Good ones are expensive, but can drill holes ranging from 7/8 to 3 in. in diameter. When you use these, avoid nails like the plague; one ding and you're faced with an expensive sharpening task.

Gigantic Holes

To create big, round holes or discs, make a swing-arm jig. This is basically a huge compass that substitutes a screw for the radius tip and a router for the pencil. For less precise tasks, use a jigsaw on a swing arm.

To create a deep, wide diameter hole (that doesn’t have to be pretty) go the low-tech route. Mark the perimeter of your hole, drill a series of 1-in. holes, then finish cutting through with a key-hole saw.

Why Would You Need A Drilling And Driving Kit?

You can be in different stages of your life – a homeowner or simply renting an apartment.

The truth is that you will, at some point or another, need to get your hands dirty for the odd job around the house. Perhaps you want to hang a picture on the wall, install door hardware, build a birdhouse, install shelving and organize your garage.

In any case, you will be thankful that you had a complete and durable kit with the right tool for the job at hand. This way you can simply complete your job and saved you a trip to the hardware store.

What Makes A Good Set?

Durability And Quality Materials

The higher-quality sets must be durable. Drill bits can be made from different materials, and each offers possibilities for different uses. Below you will find the most common materials and what they are good for:

  • Steel: good for softwood such as pine, however, they dull quickly in hardwood such as oak.
  • High-Speed Steel (also known as HSS): harder and resist heat better than normal steel ones. As a result, they hold sharpness longer. They are good for boring in wood, PVC, fiberglass, and soft metals such as brass or aluminum.
  • Cobalt: very hard and dissipate heat fast. They can drill soft metals and tough ones such as stainless steel.
  • Black oxide-coated HSS: the coating is a special finishing to increase durability and resist corrosion. They work well on the same materials as their HSS counterparts.
  • Titanium-coated HSS: they are even better and tougher than black oxide ones because they produce less friction, and work well to drill metal, wood, PVC, and fiberglass.
  • Carbide-tipped: the strongest and sharpest ones and work great for drilling masonry and tile.

As a rule of thumb, sharper points are designed to work with softer materials – drilling cleaner holes for entry and exit with higher accuracy. Flatter points usually need a pilot hole to avoid them from wandering.

Variety Of Dimensions And Shapes

In terms of diameter, a good assortment will bring sizes ranging from 1/16 to 1/4 inch. These can perfectly handle most DIY jobs around your home. Larger diameters from 5/16 to 1/2 inch can be added later since they are seldom used.

You should also pay attention to the shank size. It should not be bigger than your drill chuck, Most power drills are 1/2 inch; a drill press is usually 1/2 or 5/8 inch. All of the sets I analyzed are 1/2 inch, so you most likely will not have an issue with that.

Shanks also come in three shapes:

  • Round, which allows you to center the bit in the shank with accuracy.
  • Hex, which has 6 flat surfaces, so your power tool can grip it very tightly and apply greater torque. Hex shanks are usually found in quick-change chucks, the ones commonly found in cordless drills. That means you do not need to loosen and tighten the chuck every time you need to change bits.
  • Slotted drive system, usually referred to as SDS, is specially designed for hammer drills and their forward and backward hammering motion. The drill chuck holds it by the slots and the flat areas of the shank.

Variety Of Purposes

Also, you want variety. The best kits offer a good variety of the useful drilling and driving bits. You want your kit to contain:

  • Twist bits, also known as all-purpose bits, are the most common ones for home use.
  • Brad point bits, specially created for drilling into wood. The brad at the tip is what creates both accuracy on the entrance hole and a clean exit when exiting the wood. The extra-wide grooves, called flutes, help remove excess material.
  • Masonry bits, good for concrete, brick, and other types of tough masonry, work especially well with a hammer drill.
  • Hole saw bits, with a self-explanatory name, attach to an arbor with a pilot-hole bit and a shank to attach to your drill. They can be very useful for building that birdhouse, or even drilling a hole in your computer desktop so you can improve your cable management and hide the wires below the top. (Please note that I am talking about a hole in your desktop, not in your desktop computer!)
  • Forstner bits, good for cutting precise and big holes just like a hole saw bit, however, the Forstner bit drills cleaner holes.
  • Countersink bit – a cone-ish shape that carves material, so you can install screws flush with the wood and give your project a cleaner look. The best countersink bits also have a pilot hole point, so you can drill a pilot hole and countersink the screw head in only one action. It saves you time and makes your work look even better.

  • Standard hole saws cut to a depth of about 1-1/4 in.;
  • Deep cutting versions cut 1-3/4 in. or more — deep enough to bore through a stud in one shot.
